Summer in New England can be hot and sticky. While you can't get away from the humidity, you can at least take a day trip to one of the many beaches on the eastern coast to cool off temporarily. Summer is also a great time to take a day trip to one of the islands or a seaside village, where you can stroll the streets and shop in the quaint boutiques. It's the season for ice cream and blueberry picking, and it's also the tourist season when many outdoor attractions are open.

Beaches

With mile upon mile of beautiful coastline along the New England states, you'll have no problem finding the perfect beach to spend the day with the family. From Hammonasset Beach State Park in Connecticut to Old Orchard Beach in Maine, there are beaches perfect for every beach activity you can think of... swimming, surfing and kiteboarding, hunting for seashells and much more.

Nantucket

Islands & Coastal Villages

Putting aside the more notable islands in Massachusetts, such as Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, there are a few lesser known islands you'll want to visit. The Boston Harbor Islands are a string of small islands that offer hiking, picnicking, fishing, swimming and even fort exploration. Most are reached by a short ferry or boat ride, but a few are accessible by car. Block Island in Rhode Island has a couple of lighthouses and museums, and plenty of outdoor recreation.

Summer Eats

Summer in New England brings family trips to favorite ice cream stands and picking fresh blueberries straight off the bush. And then there are the marvelous seafood festivals held throughout the season. The Bourne Scallop Fest held in September in Bourne, MA not only offers up delicious foods, but also has a craft show, midway rides and other entertainment.

Balloon Festival

Balloon Festivals

There are numerous balloon festivals held each year in New England, offering not only balloon flights where you can pay to take a ride in one of these balloons, but they also have plenty of entertainment and activities for the family. Many, including the Quechee Hot Air Balloon Craft and Music Festival in Vermont, have craft fairs and concerts going on during the festival, and there's no shortage of concessions.
